About Punakha

Punakha is Bhutan's most stunning valley with its past, awe-inspiring views and cultural significance. Punakha lies at a height of approximately 1,200 metres above sea level and enjoys a more temperate climate than the rest of Bhutan which has made it an ideal place for agriculture and tourism. It was the capital of Bhutan until 1955 and is still a significant religious and administrative town centre. Punakha's most renowned landmark, arguably, is the Punakha Dzong, which is commonly referred to as the “Palace of Great Happiness”. Here, in the foggy bend of the meeting of the “Pho Chhu (Father River) and Mo Chhu (Mother River)”, stands this commanding fortress constructed by the unifier of Bhutan in 1637, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. The dzong is a beautiful Bhutanese structure with grotesque woodcarvings, snow-white walls and golden turrets. Bhantasyal is the winter palace of Je Khenpo, Chief Abbot of Bhutan.
Punakha is also renowned for its Punakha Tshechu, a magnificent masked dance annual religious festival and festive cultural celebration. The Chimi Lhakhang, or the Temple of Fertility is another significant site, which is consecrated to the god “Lama Drukpa Kunley”, also known as the “Divine Madman”. Couples and singles who are infertile visit the temple and pray for fertility blessings. Green rice fields are present, there are hilly slopes and the most stunning view of the Himalayas and blessed is the valley. White water rafting at “Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers” or trekking to scenic spots like Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten are some of the experiences one can have here for adventure seekers. Despite efforts being made in the areas and the focus mainly on more established tourist ventures, Punakha as it remains in its historic, religious, and natural splendor continues to be one of Bhutan's finest gems for travellers with the ability to enjoy the kingdom's ageless tradition and peaceful panorama.

The Best Time To Visit Punakha

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons to visit Punakha because at that time the weather is nice and the valley is at its most beautiful. Both seasons are noted for panoramic views, landscape scenery and an opportunity to see an entirely new world of nature, thus a very good time to travel for sightseeing, cultural tours as well as outdoor pursuits.

Spring (March to May)

Punakha is highly sought after to visit in spring. Jacaranda trees bloom and the valley is covered with brightly coloured flowers, making it a beautiful sight for a trip during this time. The enchantment is heightened as the famous Punakha Dzong is surrounded by purple jacaranda blossoms. It is warm weather with temperatures between 15°C – 25°C. It is also a perfect time to climb and go hiking, to head on the river to trek in the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.

Autumn (September to November)

Punakha is also ideally visited during autumn, as the cool and crisp air mixed with the beautiful views of the surrounding Himalayan mountains. In terms of temperature being around 10°C to 20°C, this is the ideal climate for visiting scenic landscapes and historical sites. A popular time for the “Punakha Tshechu”, a colourful religious festival with traditional mask dances and cultural performances, is October or November with an opportunity to experience Bhutanese traditions.

Winter (December to February)

Winter in Punakha is colder but milder than the rest of Bhutan. The only problem is that there are fewer crowds and it is clear and sunny.

Punakha Dzong

Punakha Dzong is one of Bhutan’s most beautiful and historically important fortresses, located at the intersection of the “Pho Chhu (Father River) and Mo Chhu (Mother River)”. It is a masterpiece of “Bhutanese architecture” built in 1637 of intricately carved woodwork, and towering whitewashed walls. It is the abode of Je Khenpo, Chief Abbot of Bhutan, in winter.

Chimi Lhakhang (Fertility Temple)

Chimi Lhakhang is located on a hilltop and it is a sacred temple devoted to “Lama Drukpa Kunley”, also called the “Divine Madman”. Couples come here to conceive as it became famous for its fertility blessings. In it, there were phallic symbols painted on houses for protection from evil spirits and because they were good luck.

Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten

Bhutan’s Peace Stupa was built to bring peace and harmony flowing into Bhutan and to the world. The hike through picturesque rice fields and hills requires a hike to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Punakha Valley. The interior paintings are sophisticated and spiritual with elaborate symbolism and the architecture is intricate.

Suspension Bridge

Over the “Pho Chhu River”, there is one of the most extended suspension bridges in Bhutan, the walk across it is exciting but beautiful. Those views include a lush valley, a mountainous environment, and the bridge itself.

Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery

Beautifully located on its ridge, Panakha nunnery is poised for magnificent views of the valleys of Punakha and Wangdue. The main image here is a tall bronze image of Avalokiteshvara which houses a meditation and education centre for Buddhist nuns. A combination of history, spirituality and natural beauty, Punakha is a must-visit destination in Bhutan.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are excellent seasons for visitors as spring gives friendly weather with stunning scenery, and autumn brings pleasant weather again. Keep away from the monsoon (June to August) due to heavy rainfall.

Clothing & Packing

1. Pack light cotton clothes for warmer months and warm layers for winter (December–February).
2. Wear comfortable walking shoes, as many attractions require some walking or hiking.

Respect Local Culture

1. Bhutanese culture is deeply rooted in Buddhism, so dress modestly when visiting monasteries and dzongs.
2. Always remove shoes before entering temples.

Travel Permits

1. Foreign visitors need a Bhutanese visa and must book through a licensed tour operator.
2. Entry to certain dzongs may require a special permit.

Hiking to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten

This moderate 45-minute hike winds through rice fields and lush hills to one of the most beautiful hilltop stupas in Bhutan, Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten. It is a peaceful walk once to get off this trail. The surroundings are breathtaking. It’s at the top and offers constant panoramic views of the Punakha Valley, a great place to take a photo and to enjoy Bhutan in its serene landscapes.

Punakha Suspension Bridge Walk

This scenic walkway is one of Bhutan’s most elongated suspension bridges that intersect the “Pho Chhu River” allowing people to witness a thrilling and very peaceful experience. On the bridge, there are breathtaking valley views, rendering it a wonderful place for photography and sightseeing. Looking very lush and green, so it’s an ideal place to absorb Punakha's wonderful natural beauty and tranquil state of mind.
